GYLDENDAL has brought out the first Danish translation of James Joyce’s ‘The Cats of Copenhagen’ in time for Christmas 2012. Gyldendal’s book for children, Københavnerkatte, is translated by Suzanne Brøgger, illustrated by Casey Sorrow, and beautifully designed by Maria Lundén for the Danish language in expressive typography inspired by Michael Caine’s original setting for our Ithys Press first edition.

Congratulations to Psichogios Publications on their launch of the first Greek translation of James Joyce’s The Cats of Copenhagen! Translated by George-Icaros Bampasakis and published by arrangement with Ithys Press, the Psichogios edition features the original illustrations by Casey Sorrow and Greek typography inspired by Michael Caine’s designs. The Psichogios edition is available in a trade hardcover and ebook.

Scribner / Simon & Schuster has just launched the first US edition of James Joyce’s The Cats of Copenhagen, by special arrangement with Ithys Press. We’re delighted that Scribner’s Cats — they’re more like kittens, really! — will reach a wide readership; something we, as a small fine-press simply aren’t geared up to do. Best of all, the Scribner edition features Michael Caine’s visually astonishing typography and Casey Sorrow’s wonderfully inventive illustrations, all in a compact little volume, just half the size of our own.

Just released today, 24 October 2012: the Italian translation of James Joyce’s The Cats of Copenhagen in a fantastically colourful edition for children by Giunti Editore!  I Gatti di Copenhagen is published by arrangement with Ithys Press and features all of Casey Sorrow’s original illustrations. Favoloso!

Ithys Press will be featured in a new book surveying the best in international contemporary letterpress printing.  For the Love of Letterpress, co-authored by Martha Chiplis and Cathie Ruggie Saunders, will  be published by A&C Black, appearing in the UK in August 2012 and in the US in October 2012. The book addresses the teaching and learning this vintage technology.

Our Cats of Copenhagen illustrator Casey Sorrow is featured in this year’s Ultimate Comic Art Issue of the  graphic-arts glossy Imagine FX. We’re thrilled for him as he joins the ranks of comic greats like Jean “Moebius” Giraud (Blueberry), Adam Hughes (DC and Marvel Comics), and Ralph McQuarrie (Star Wars).

ITHYS PRESS has pleasure in announcing the first-ever appearance in print of James Joyce’s Story for Children, THE CATS OF COPENHAGEN in a special letterpress, illustrated edition.

Written on 5 September 1936 and never before published, James Joyce’s ‘The Cats of Copenhagen’ is the slightly younger twin sister to ‘The Cat and the Devil’.

This fine-press first edition is meticulously designed and printed by Michael Caine and illustrated by Casey Sorrow to make the most of the expressive interplay of word, image and story. Entirely hand-crafted, the edition is a tribute to Joyce’s own internationalist spirit, eccentric humour and creative genius.

Published in January 2012, this Ithys Press large-format, letterpress edition of 200 copies is limited to 26 Lettered copies, 170 Numbered copies, and 4 copies Hors Commerce.

Michael Caine is a book artist: printmaker, typographer, publisher (Editions Petropolis), and printer. Under a variety of pseudonyms he has designed, illustrated and produced over 50 livres d’artiste. Michael’s checklist of authors published includes: Beckett, Crevel, Lorca, Neruda, Pound, and now, Joyce. Based in Paris since 1990, he has created, set and hand-printed over 130 commissioned works for the ‘creme de la creme’ of the European bibliophile circle, film directors, and gourmet restaurants. He has employed a wondrously expressive array of rare, historic Italian and French typefaces in this specially commissioned Ithys Press first edition of James Joyce’s story for children.

Casey is a cartoonist, printmaker, and illustrator. He was classically trained and raised on a steady diet of the Muppets, Schultz’s Peanuts, and Kung Fu movies. A rebellious streak and a quick quirky humour underpin his artwork and its focus on pop-culture iconography. Casey derives much of his inspiration from his father’s lauded military service and from the war imagery of vintage comics. He lives and works in the state of Michigan, ‘America’s High Five’. For this Ithys letterpress first edition, Casey’s specially commissioned, original pen and ink hand-drawings were made into clichés typographiques and printed on a rare American-built Vandercook SP 33 proofing press.
