Ithys Press will be featured in a new book surveying the best in international contemporary letterpress printing. For the Love of Letterpress, co-authored by Martha Chiplis and Cathie Ruggie Saunders, will be published by A&C Black, appearing in the UK in August 2012 and in the US in October 2012. The book addresses the teaching and learning this vintage technology.
ITHYS PRESS has pleasure in announcing the first-ever appearance in print of James Joyce’s Story for Children, THE CATS OF COPENHAGEN in a special letterpress, illustrated edition.
Written on 5 September 1936 and never before published, James Joyce’s ‘The Cats of Copenhagen’ is the slightly younger twin sister to ‘The Cat and the Devil’.
This fine-press first edition is meticulously designed and printed by Michael Caine and illustrated by Casey Sorrow to make the most of the expressive interplay of word, image and story. Entirely hand-crafted, the edition is a tribute to Joyce’s own internationalist spirit, eccentric humour and creative genius.
Published in January 2012, this Ithys Press large-format, letterpress edition of 200 copies is limited to 26 Lettered copies, 170 Numbered copies, and 4 copies Hors Commerce.

Michael Caine is a book artist: printmaker, typographer, publisher (Editions Petropolis), and printer. Under a variety of pseudonyms he has designed, illustrated and produced over 50 livres d’artiste. Michael’s checklist of authors published includes: Beckett, Crevel, Lorca, Neruda, Pound, and now, Joyce. Based in Paris since 1990, he has created, set and hand-printed over 130 commissioned works for the ‘creme de la creme’ of the European bibliophile circle, film directors, and gourmet restaurants. He has employed a wondrously expressive array of rare, historic Italian and French typefaces in this specially commissioned Ithys Press first edition of James Joyce’s story for children.
